Transitioning Your Wardrobe Into Spring – Styled by McKenz

It’s officially spring and temperatures are slowly but surely creeping up! I think it’ll be a while before we’re wearing shorts… in the meantime, I thought it would be helpful to share some tips and tricks on transitioning your wardrobe from winter to spring. Plus, I’m sharing a couple of outfit ideas to help get you through.

Becuase let’s be real, there’s nothing harder to dress for than fifty-degree weather. I swear it’s freezing in the morning and by lunchtime, I’m breaking a sweat.

1) Layer Up: These awkward weeks where the weather can’t make up its mind can easily be fixed with a few layers. This time of year I’m always tossing on a cardigan, flannel, shacket, or zip-up. These pieces not only add dimension to an outfit but they give you a little extra warmth which is a must for those brisk mornings. Come afternoon, shed the layer and tie it around your waist (or shoulders) for a laid-back vibe.

2) Opt For Ankle Lengths: I also like to transition from full-length pants to ankle-length. The extra inch on display cools you down a bit and it leaves room for a fun pair of spring shoes. The same goes for jeans, leggings, and my fun flowy pants. If you’re feeling bold, throw on a skirt with a pair of sheer tights!

3) Find *The* Transition Shoe: One of my biggest struggles this time of year is deciding which shoes to wear. Boots oftentimes feel too chunky and yet it’s still a little too cold for sandals. I find myself reaching for sneakers more than ever. I wear my high-top Converse all year round but my low-top Dolce Vita sneakers are hands down my most worn shoes in the spring/fall. They are the perfect transition shoe and truly pair with everything. Not to mention, I could walk for miles in these!

How I’m Styling Them

Throw all of those tips together and you’ve got the outfit pictured above! A simple Skims bodysuit tucked into straight-leg jeans. These ones are cropped, making them the perfect pairing with these sneakers. I just got a new pair of Zinas and am loving the mix of neutrals. Toss on a corduroy shacket and you’re good to go.

If this is still a little chilly for you, toss on another layer. You could easily wear a hooded zip-up under the shacket to double up on layers!

4) Bring Out The Basics: This time of year is when I break out all of the basics. I’ve got black and white bodysuits in every style: long sleeve, short sleeve, and tank top. Depending on how chilly it is, I’ll reach for one or the other. These are the perfect layering pieces and can easily be transitioned from season to season. I recommend checking out Express’s Body Contour line for the best stuff.

5) Mix Neutrals: While I do love a bright pop of color this time of year, I find myself mixing neutrals quite often. Lots of denim, whites, tans, and black. Of course, you can accessorize with a bit of color to spice things up.

6) Don’t Be Afraid To Accessorize: This is also the time of year I start to really accessorize. I’m shedding those bulky beanies for fun felt hats. My gold hoops? They can be retired for cute statement earrings. I also like to reach for scarves as they are that perfect “in-between” when temperatures get tricky to navigate.

How I’m Styling Them

We had a warmer spring day today, in the sixties and so a basic tank bodysuit was just what the doctor ordered. I tucked this piece into the cutest neutral pants from SheIn. These have a straight-leg fit. They were originally full-length however, I ended up snipping a couple of inches off the bottoms to make them ankle length. Now they’ll pair perfectly with my Zina sneakers and other flat sandals. I also love this length of pants with a heel; trust me, it really elongates the legs.

Popping on my favorite felt hat + butterfly earring combo for the third year in a row. I just adore these two together and look forward to styling them together each spring.

I’m off to California later this week and can hardly wait for the eighty-degree temperatures that await me. In the meantime, I’ll be using these tips to push through these awkward spring transition weeks. As always, for more outfit ideas make sure you’re tuning in every Sunday for my Weekly Wrap-Ups.
